The Union Cabinet of India approved the proposal for creating 20751 additional posts in the Income Tax Department in various cadres. This means that there will be 1349 additional posts in Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers cadre as well as 19402 additional posts in non-IRS cadres. The expenditure will cost approximately 450 crore rs as exactly (449.71 cr) for recruiting of additional posts and this would get 25,000 cr per year, an increased revenue for the government .

The Cabinet has approved this recruitment of IT Department over 20,000 jobs of tax officials across the country in the next two years. This will help generate additional revenue of 25,000 crore annually," finance minister P Chidambaram has said that the government plans to collect over 6.68 lakh crore from direct taxes in the current fiscal, up from 5.65 lakh crore in the previous fiscal.

As per the restructuring plan, around 1349 officials would be recruited through Indian Revenue Service (Group A) route and around 19,000 will be inducted as Group B and Group C officials. The Cabinet also approved a special drive for filling up reserved category posts.
